When you feel relaxed and rested, you are able to do better and be better. This is important for everyone, but I’m going to emphasize the need for parents in particular.

How to Recharge Your Batteries:

As parents, we are constantly putting our kid’s needs before our own and it can become exhausting.
  • The kids eat before you eat and before you know it you’ve skipped lunch and it’s now 3 p.m. and you are starving.
  • Little dude is up again at night. Will I ever sleep again?
  • No nap time means no break.

As a parent, we are the number one caregiver to our kids. If you also work full time, that leaves little time for “me time.” It can be almost impossible to carve out time for yourself, but it’s so important to do. I’m not suggesting that you take a vacation or do something really big. Even waking up early one day to actually drink your coffee while it’s hot and read a non-children’s book, or scheduling an hour for yourself in the evening – taking turns with your partner if that’s possible – can give you some much needed time to re-balance and re-energize yourself.

I find that when I take some time for myself, I’m a better mom.

Here’s something else to consider. One person’s way to recharge may be completely different from how someone else recharges. For instance, running or biking may be your partner’s way to recharge, but connecting with friends may be what you need.

There is no right or wrong way to recharge, as long as you do it.

This weekend I was able to go to brunch with a friend and have an uninterrupted conversation! We were able to catch up after not seeing each other for several months. When I came home, I played with my kids more enthusiastically and I even cleaned the bathroom without feel resentful of the time I was spending on chores. Win!

This week try to carve out an hour of time for you in order to recharge your batteries. Choose what you want to do and separate it from the daily tasks that must get done. Instead, devote the time to your favorite hobby or some self-care like getting a massage. Enjoy it!

Best,
Meghan
