Get cozy for winter by embracing Hygge and these winter survival tips. Plus, a free Gettin’ Hygge With It printable to decorate your home.
Winter. My least favorite season.
Why? It’s so cold where I live in Minnesota and the days are so short. When it’s pitch black at 5:00 pm it feels like it’s time to go to bed.
The season isn’t changing (outside of global warming, yikes) so there’s only one thing to do: Embrace it!
That’s where the concept of hygge comes in. Today I’m sharing a few tips, a free printable, and my favorite products for gettin’ hygge with it to survive winter.
What is Hygge?
Hygge, a Danish word that, translated into English, means a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.

Basically, hygge is about being cozy, happy, and taking part in feasting, drinking, and enjoying merry company with friends and family.
Hygge may have become a buzzword lately, but the concept holds true for surviving the winter months.
And in case you were wondering, it’s pronounced “hoo-ga.” Think hug.
Read on for easy tips on how to survive winter.
How to survive winter? Embrace the weather!
While we tend to think of hygge as only about being cozy on the couch, the Nordic culture strongly identifies with spending time outside, and winter is no exception.
Over the years, I’ve realized that the best way to enjoy the outdoors is to dress for it. That means investing in some key pieces, particularly a good coat and boots.
Outdoor Essentials
Cozy up your home
We tend to spend more time indoors during the Winter, so why not make your space extra cozy.
Grab a new fuzzy blanket, some slippers, dim the lights, light some candles, and brew a cup of tea.
Making your space somewhere you want to be can help you feel less cooped up during the coldest months of the year.
Winter Home Essentials
Make time for merriment
There is nothing better than a relaxing night in during the winter. Invite some friends over for feasting and merriment with tapas and delicious cocktails, like an Old Fashioned served in a fun glass.
Be sure to turn on some tunes, light the fire, and hunker down for an evening of music and conversation. Sounds like a great way to start gettin’ hygge with it!
