Minecraft Trunk or Treat Ideas

When trunk or treat season rolled around, I wasn’t about to design a whole new theme from scratch. At the time, my son was deep into his Minecraft era and we had thrown a Minecraft birthday party earlier that year, so I raided that decor stash and pulled together a Minecraft trunk or treat that took almost no extra effort and looked like I’d planned it for weeks.

That’s really the trick with trunk or treat: you don’t need a whole new party’s worth of decorations, you need a backdrop that reads well in a parking lot at dusk and a game that keeps a line of kids entertained without you having to run it completely by yourself.

The Trunk Backdrop

I covered the back of the trunk with a stone table cover. I used for the Minecraft birthday party backdrop, which instantly reads as Minecraft stone terrain without any painting or building. It’s one of those decorations that earns its keep across more than one party. Here’s similar options for the stone table cover from Oriental Trading or this one on Amazon.

For the centerpiece, I framed a sign I’d already designed as part of my free Minecraft party printable set, the “Never Dig Straight Down” print, and set it against the green pixel paper as a mat behind the frame. You’ll need to print out 2-3 copies of the green pixel paper and line them up depending on the size of your frame. A large black frame gave it enough presence to anchor the whole display.

I strung the little TNT dynamite garland I’d made for the birthday party across the top of the backdrop and hung a foil TNT balloon off to the side. Both were sitting in a bin from the last party, so this trunk or treat cost me exactly zero dollars in new decorations.

The Creeper Cup Game

This was the easiest game I’ve ever set up, and the kids didn’t care one bit that it was simple. I lined up a mix of green and black stadium cups, some elevated on DIY Creeper-face boxes for variety, and dropped a battery-operated tea light into each one. Once it got dark, the whole lineup glowed, which felt appropriately creepy for a Minecraft Halloween game.

I used these green stadium cups and black studium cups that I had on hand, but you could use green solo cups. Grab some black ones too, to represent the Enderman.

The Creeper faces on the cups are cut from temporary vinyl (a Cricut makes quick work of this, but scissors and a steady hand would work too) and stuck straight onto plain stadium cups. Kids used ping pong balls and tried to land one in a cup, Creeper-hunting style.

The one thing I’d tell you to plan for: ping pong balls go flying. We had an extra person on ball-retrieval duty all night, and it was worth it. Stock up on more balls than you think you’ll need, because a decent number end up rolling under cars in the lot.
